Systems Engineering & Integration
The Fulcrum team has systems engineering and integration services experience on a variety of projects for both the Department of the Navy and the Department of Transportation.
Technology developed in a vacuum has little chance of transitioning to the operational forces or finding a commercial application. While basic science and technology can and should be explored without the constraint of a target application, development of mature technology requires that technology be developed for a specific purpose. Almost without exception, the technology must be integrated into, or at least interoperate with, other components in a system or other systems in a “system of systems”.
Fulcrum has a strong contingent of systems engineers covering a diverse area of systems engineering expertise.
This includes:
  • Total Ship Systems Integration and Design
  • Remote/Local Sensor & Communications Integration
  • Human Performance & Human Factors System Integration
  • Transportation Systems Integration
S&T/R&D Systems Engineering
Systems engineering is essential in the early stages of a mature technology project to ensure the technology will meet the interface, size, weight, user preference, and other process, system, or platform objectives. In addition, systems engineering must be applied to avoid the tendency of developers to optimize their component resulting in a suboptimum overall system.
S&T/R&D Integration
Integration involves the adaptation of existing and new components and systems to provide a desired capability or performance. It requires a complete understanding of the legacy system and the new technology. In some cases, it may require numerical modeling of these systems and components to simulate their integrated behavior and to develop control algorithms, procedures, and / or changes to the components to get the desired results.
Technical and Engineering Support Services
In the planning and execution of programs, Program and Project Officers require specific technical and engineering support services. During the program planning phase, the support is focused on the art of the possible and in setting metrics and exit criteria that can be delivered within the budget and schedule allotted without breaking any of the laws of physics, chemistry, thermodynamics, etc. Similarly, during the program execution phase, support focuses on providing engineering/technical ‘sanity checks’, validating calculations, reviewing/performing simulations, and overseeing testing/demonstrations.
This type of support requires vast experience in a variety of disciplines including: physics, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, civil engineering, as well as specialized fields to include: acoustical engineering, naval architecture, human systems integration, and many others.
The Fulcrum Team brings expertise in all of the above stated fields to provide unparalleled support to our clients.
